One of the proudest days of my life was the day I was sworn in as a new citizen of the United States. After years of waiting and losing tens of thousands of dollars to crooks and scams, after years of hiding from everyone in society, my family was finally able to come out of hiding and be legally recognized. We owe a debt of gratitude to people like Congressman Luis Gutierrez and the amnesty law of 1986. As a psychologist, author and advocate of education, I am very proud to say I am a legal U.S. Citizen and an example that immigration reform works.
Immigration reform is needed again in order...

The story of human existence is really the story and evolution of human consciousness. As cultures evolve, so does their search for meaning and understanding. All of our ancestors, across time and distance, across every culture, have looked up to the heavens contemplating the nature and power of creation. What is this force behind creation? What is our relationship to the all powerful? What is the purpose and source of our existence? Because we, as humans, have self awareness, we can also contemplate the nature of our relationships to the Creator. We have been created out of the same...

Nuestros ojos...

Lima Peru-Healing Retreat
☼ I recently returned from a trip to Lima Peru, where I facilitated an intensive three day healing retreat. During this retreat, I witnessed many profoundly powerful examples of self transformation, healing and liberation. I know this experience will remain with me forever. The audience was a mixture of professional staff from Stela Maris Hospital, doctors, nurses and other professionals as well as teachers and workers of San Judas primary college. Both of these institutions are operated by the Sisters of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
More and more,...

Building a Participatory Democracy
☼Across our nation, many young people are experiencing the severe impact of our economic downturn. A declining economy has resulted in the denial of basic health and social services to those most in need and is most evident in the increasing deterioration of our educational system that is unable to teach to the growing diversity of its student body. It is estimated that the high trend of Latino students dropping out of school will continue to increase at least throughout the next decade, resulting in more than 50% of Latino youth dropping out of school nationally....

Latino -Bashing? Who Cares?
☼There are many apparent tragedies associated with these times of change and transition. Large banks and corporations are disappearing daily, huge companies are facing historic lay-offs and many families and individuals are struggling to get by. Arguably, the most tragic losses occur in rural and urban areas with large Latino and immigrant communities. The Mexican flu has transformed into the swine-flu while countless families continue to be deported and parents are continuously separated from their children.
In Pennsylvania a young Mexican immigrant man is beaten...

Education and Coming Home:
☼On Friday, Feburary 27th, I presented a workshop for Kane County Teachers at Mercy Hospital in Aurora Illinois. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Jerry Murphy and the Kane County Department of Mental Health for coordinating the event. The focus of the workshop was to provide some recommendations to teachers and school social workers when working with youth of color. Presenting to this distinguished group of professionals was an incredible experience in many ways. But the most dramatic reason why this experience was particularly powerful, occurred to...

The Fifth Sun in Napa
☼In the five years that I have known her, I have come to feel a deep sense of admiration for my friend Catalina Chavez-Tapia and her commitment to Latino Migrant families in Napa Valley, California. She is an incredible community organizer with a true passion for the wellbeing and concern of the migrant families. Thousands of men and women in the Napa Valley labor long under the hot sun in endless days of back-breaking work that is seldom acknowledged. Catalina is focused and successful. She directs the coordination of an annual Latina Health Fair; she organizes dinners...
