It ‘s been an incredible week! I wanted to share a wonderful feature article that ran in the Beacon News just a few days ago. The article offers a personal look into the writing of my book, The Promise of the Fifth Sun: Ancestral Journey of Self Discovery, and my upcoming book presentation at the Copley Theatre on Saturday, November 21st in my hometown, Aurora, IL.
My lecture is entitled “Aztec and Toltec Teachings Reveal Keys to Living Your Best Life Now“. We will have Aztec Dancers, food, music, cocktails and a special books signing. Please see EVENTS for all the info...

When Elba Aranda-Suh, Executive Director of the National Latino Education Institute (NLEI) honored me with an invitation to be the Keynote Speaker for the NLEI graduation, she gave me a great theme for the address. A Pathway to Latino Success is the title she offered.
For more than a week before the presentation, I pondered the title. What is Latino Success or African-American Success or any specific group’s success as compared to just general success? As I thought about my own path to success, I recall the challenges of poverty, violence, addiction, barriers to health and education that...

Breaking the Cycle of Addiction:
☼Last Thursday, April 16th I was invited to present at Hased House, a shelter in Aurora, Illinois for homeless men and women many who are suffering from chronic addiction problems. A heartfelt thanks to Maria Chazaro for her invitation. The title of my presentation was, “Breaking the Chain of Addiction”.
It is difficult to break the cycle of addiction because we as a society don’t typically practice what we’ve come to know as “best practices”. As a society, we are very confused about our thoughts regarding the addict...

Presentation at Los Medanos College, Pittsburg, California
☼Hard to believe that it has been almost ten years since I decided to move from Chicago to California searching for myself and for a deeper awareness of my own existence. Back then, as a young psychologist, I felt the unmistakable call to search for what it means to dream in this fertile land of possibilities. I hungered for closeness and understanding of the silent and strong men in my family, particularly my father and grandfather. In search of a connection to them and their experience, I followed their footsteps all the way...

Education and Coming Home:
☼On Friday, Feburary 27th, I presented a workshop for Kane County Teachers at Mercy Hospital in Aurora Illinois. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Jerry Murphy and the Kane County Department of Mental Health for coordinating the event. The focus of the workshop was to provide some recommendations to teachers and school social workers when working with youth of color. Presenting to this distinguished group of professionals was an incredible experience in many ways. But the most dramatic reason why this experience was particularly powerful, occurred to...

The Fifth Sun in Napa
☼In the five years that I have known her, I have come to feel a deep sense of admiration for my friend Catalina Chavez-Tapia and her commitment to Latino Migrant families in Napa Valley, California. She is an incredible community organizer with a true passion for the wellbeing and concern of the migrant families. Thousands of men and women in the Napa Valley labor long under the hot sun in endless days of back-breaking work that is seldom acknowledged. Catalina is focused and successful. She directs the coordination of an annual Latina Health Fair; she organizes dinners...

UN NUEVO SOL
☼As I return to Chicago from Lima, Peru, the events of the days when I was there flood my mind with new insights. Perhaps the most obvious and profound example of such awareness is summarized in this simple statement: “You cannot guide others through a process of discovering their inner journey without somehow being confronted with your own self analysis.”
The Sisters of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Lima, Peru is a community started by a group of German nuns seventy years ago. Today, the Sisters operate several institutions, including a large hospital...

☼In my book, “The Promise of the Fifth Sun”, I emphasize the importance of taking good care of our thoughts. Our thoughts not only determine our emotional wellbeing, but they also impact our physical health. More and more, scientists are uncovering that depression increases our vulnerability to severe and chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac complications. A few weeks ago, Maria Aurora Dias, a nurse, a friend and the clinical manager of the Mercy-Provena Diabetic Wellness Center in Aurora, Illinois, invited me to present on the connection between depression and diabetes....

☼This past Monday, October 13, I had the honor and privilege of presenting at the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) Region V meeting in Techny, Illinois. This conference of Catholic religious leaders is comprised of Provincials directing different religious communities throughout the Midwest and the nation. I had the opportunity to lead one of two hour presentations on immigration, social justice and the current challenges faced by so many families and children. The second presenter was attorney at law, Mary O’Reilly who is in private practice. Mary presented on the laws and lack...
