The world has grown tired and weary of fighting. Thousands of years of war and domination demonstrate the futility of violence. Despite these repetitive lessons, it seems we cannot stop for a moment and contemplate the collective and individual impact that such legacy leaves on our souls.
We have become a society addicted to fear and have developed a hypersensitivity to intimidation. While we are able to see all the conflicts taking place around us, most of us don’t dare speak up. “What’s the point?” We convince ourselves that nothing we do or say is going to make a difference anyway....

One of the proudest days of my life was the day I was sworn in as a new citizen of the United States. After years of waiting and losing tens of thousands of dollars to crooks and scams, after years of hiding from everyone in society, my family was finally able to come out of hiding and be legally recognized. We owe a debt of gratitude to people like Congressman Luis Gutierrez and the amnesty law of 1986. As a psychologist, author and advocate of education, I am very proud to say I am a legal U.S. Citizen and an example that immigration reform works.
Immigration reform is needed again in order...

Nuestros ojos...

Last week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has had me glued to the internet. The images have been haunting and I am struck by the magnitude of such an event…in such a poor country. Current reports put the death toll at over 20,000 (sadly rising) with an estimated 300,000 people living on the street. I have been incredibly impressed with the outpouring of support from around the world. Millions of dollars have been raised through the simple act of sending a text message. Indeed, today’s instant communication venues through email, text messages, tweets and blogs facilitate an unprecedented...

When Elba Aranda-Suh, Executive Director of the National Latino Education Institute (NLEI) honored me with an invitation to be the Keynote Speaker for the NLEI graduation, she gave me a great theme for the address. A Pathway to Latino Success is the title she offered.
For more than a week before the presentation, I pondered the title. What is Latino Success or African-American Success or any specific group’s success as compared to just general success? As I thought about my own path to success, I recall the challenges of poverty, violence, addiction, barriers to health and education that...

☼ This past Saturday, I had the honor of attending a meeting at the Mexican General Consulate that featured the Mexican Secretariat of Education, Alonso Lujambio, the Secretariat of Health, Jose Angel Cordoba and various leaders of the Mexican-immigrant and service community. This formal visit was orchestrated by President Calderon to address the needs of Mexican immigrants living in the United States. The meeting represents the first time in history that a Mexican President has specifically sought to address this critical issue. What happens to immigrant families and children who are...

Building a Participatory Democracy
☼Across our nation, many young people are experiencing the severe impact of our economic downturn. A declining economy has resulted in the denial of basic health and social services to those most in need and is most evident in the increasing deterioration of our educational system that is unable to teach to the growing diversity of its student body. It is estimated that the high trend of Latino students dropping out of school will continue to increase at least throughout the next decade, resulting in more than 50% of Latino youth dropping out of school nationally....
