Casa Del Toro, in association with the Integral Health and Training Institute will lovingly and thoughtfully guide you through a 5-day transformative journey toward Health and Wellness in Cuervavaca, the City of Eternal Spring. This highly experiential workshop will integrate the mind, body, culture, and soul into an effective wellness program. The beautiful setting for this experiential workshop is the historic Hacienda of Santa Maria Del Trapiche, once owned by Benito Juarez.

Author and Psychologist, Dr. Jorge Partida and Health and Wellness Master, Da’Mon Vann will present an evidenced based practice model designed to transform your life. This will include individual Health and Wellness assessments and will culminate in participants knowing how to design and implement individualized programs to care for the mind, body, and soul. Through the weaving together of Shamanic ritual, Traditional Psychology, Nutrition, Exercise, and Mindfulness practice, participants will learn how to realign their physical and emotional bodies to better attune to their own and their clients needs. Beginning with an opening ritual, we will take a journey into the mystery, power, and grace of transformative psychology and wellness. The curriculum will include daily meditation, experiential exercises, and group process.

In addition, there will be a ritual day trip to Xochicalco, a legendary holy site known as “The Place of Flowers” and cultural excursions to the historic colonial silver mining city of Taxco and the lovely town center of Cuernavaca where participants can broaden and deepen their experience through cultural awareness. We hope you join us for an experience that will guide your journey long after the workshop is complete.

DURING THIS WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS WILL:

Apply evidenced based research and literature in the field of cultural competency and ethnomedicine to integrate cross cultural models of wellness (both physical and mental) and self care.

Discuss and apply principles of integrated health and wellness from native healing traditions to inform and enhance clinical practice with diverse populations as well as to improve personal health in clinical settings and daily living.

Discover and explore the mind body connection from both dominant and native cultural perspectives to demonstrate the physiological role of emotions and muscle function in integrative cultural healing rituals and practices.

Learn to identify and incorporate mind/body measures to create an integrated assessment and treatment plan to be used for care of both self and patients in clinical practice.

Explore the role of culture and ritual as ethnomedicine and cross-cultural healing practices. Various native healing principles will be discussed and practiced, including ancestral teachings emphasizing the importance of balance, harmony, mindfulness, and integration.

Compare and contrast ethnomedicine practicies with traditional psychotherapeutic tecniques and apply these components of healing in personal transformation and clinical work.

The world has grown tired and weary of fighting. Thousands of years of war and domination demonstrate the futility of violence. Despite these repetitive lessons, it seems we cannot stop for a moment and contemplate the collective and individual impact that such legacy leaves on our souls.

We have become a society addicted to fear and have developed a hypersensitivity to intimidation. While we are able to see all the conflicts taking place around us, most of us don’t dare speak up. “What’s the point?” We convince ourselves that nothing we do or say is going to make a difference anyway. No one is listening. No one cares. We have seen how our society has a habit of making martyrs of those that make a stand. Throughout history, we have sat in fear as our heroes were wiped away. We sit by the sidelines secretly feeling grateful that the systemic elimination didn’t happen to me. Some people say nothing because they are aware of how they profit from violence. Others are afraid of losing their job or status if they speak up, but most of us have come to believe that the government and related machines are too large for one voice to really feel heard. Recently, a man was at a BP gas station filling up his car when someone drove next to him and asked him how it was that he was not boycotting BP for all they’ve done to our ocean. The man filling up responded by saying, “it must be great to feel outrage”. Like the man at the gas station, most of us are having trouble mustering the indignation for all that is taking place around us. Sometimes, the world just seems to complicated and conflicted, besides, with the economy as bad as it is, most of us have enough troubles trying to focus on our own survival.

While we may have difficulty harnessing outrage over the world’s violence, corruption, pollution, economy and all other evils, we seem fascinated by the petty grievances of reality television. The Real Housewives are neither real nor are they really housewives, yet their hair pulling and silicone implants have us glued to the television, watching with great outrage. Reality television has become a platform for competition, elimination, backstabbing and all other sorts of social corruption convincing us that these are the conflicts that really matter and perhaps we need not worry about anything else.

The time has come for us to wipe away the cobwebs of apathy. We must venture out again and explore the vast regions outside of our narrow comfort zone. We must take responsibility and recognize once more that we are a vital part of all that happens in the world around us. In order to do this, we must reconnect to the intuitive wisdom within and we must stop relying on paid mouthpieces that organize information and events into exclusive categories. Ignorance does not own the world yet and there are friends and allies to be made in places that would surprise us all. Consider a recent story from New York Associated Press. The story read, “Chief executives of several major corporations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Disney and News Corp., are joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a coalition advocating for immigration reform-including a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants now in the United States.” The group is called the “Partnership for a New American-Economy” and seems to reframe immigration reform as the solution to our economic woes.

These “new” partnerships work because they operate on reality and not fear. Because we are all interconnected, our world cannot survive as long as we deny basic human rights to entire populations. We must reclaim the lost art of listening to our intuition. We must relearn the art of sitting still so that we may once again hear the wisdom of our own intuitive voice. This wisdom underscores that our individual and collective progress is impossible if and when it is based on the oppression of others. It is not too late to impact our world. To do so, we must once again believe in the strength and conviction of our individual voice. We must learn to tune out the noise and confusion fighting for our attention and dare to question the prepackaged messages of fear, intimidation and lack.

We are awakening to a new age of self-realization. Science and technology are teaching us that we are more powerful than we previously thought. Each one of us has an ability to create the world around us. Our thoughts become manifested as physical reality. With this fact in mind, let us turn our thoughts away from fear and apathy and begin to reclaim the power we have to change our individual life and to impact the world.

One of the proudest days of my life was the day I was sworn in as a new citizen of the United States. After years of waiting and losing tens of thousands of dollars to crooks and scams, after years of hiding from everyone in society, my family was finally able to come out of hiding and be legally recognized. We owe a debt of gratitude to people like Congressman Luis Gutierrez and the amnesty law of 1986. As a psychologist, author and advocate of education, I am very proud to say I am a legal U.S. Citizen and an example that immigration reform works.

Immigration reform is needed again in order to combat Arizona immigration laws, which makes it legal to stop and arrest someone who is “suspected” of being illegal. How can a person tell that someone is illegal without employing racial profiling? Rep. Bilbray says that one can tell by the, “different type of attire, there’s different type of …right down to the shoes, right down to the clothes. But mostly by behavior, it’s mostly behavior”. Is that not racial profiling?

I came to this country illegally when I was nine years old after being separated from my parents and younger siblings for two years. In the mid 1970’s like many immigrants, my parents came to the USA forced out of their country by international failed economic policies and corporate greed. For many years, my family lived in crowded, substandard housing, exposed to every danger, hiding and living in constant fear of deportation. My childhood was lonely and difficult as my parents worked unreasonably long hours in factories just to put food on our table. I was forbidden to have friends for fear we would be reported. I learned early on the terrible realities of racism and intolerance. Being labeled as illegal created in me a sense of unworthiness and inferiority which I have fought to overcome my entire life.

Yet, I have not given up my right to live the American dream. Now I can proudly say that it is legally my dream. My parents always taught me that education was the best way to transcend the limitations imposed by poverty. To honor their teachings, I worked full time and studied full time, paying for my own schooling until I obtained my doctorate. I have made every effort to be a source of pride for my family, my ancestral Mexico and my new nation. From childhood, I have learned to believe and work for success, so that I may one day celebrate the gifts of citizenship and proudly live the foundational ideals of freedom, justice and equality.

Like me, there are thousands of professionals, proud Mexican and Mexican-Americans who work and serve our nation so that it may continue to ever be the beacon of liberty and opportunity. Yet, we cannot continue to sit by the sidelines quietly watching the deterioration of our great country. All who are proud to call themselves American citizens must feel compelled to speak up. Across our country, approximately half of our Latino youth are unable to graduate from high school, while social services, health-care and access to higher education continue to be reduced and blocked.
Now, the hateful and misguided immigration laws of Arizona have opened the door for greater national division and further oppression of those already most abused and dehumanized.

I am a proud US citizen and I am the dream of a new nation born of the aspirations of all those that came before me. I am equally proud to have been born in Mexico, the land of hospitality that one day opened its doors to undocumented European immigrants in search of a home only to have more than half of its nation taken in return. That hope and longing for freedom and inclusion, which burns in the hearts of all Mexican immigrants, can never be denied by any law or circumstance. Let us never forget that our country is founded by the sacrifices of immigrants from every country in the world who have contributed their culture, talent and knowledge in order to make this nation great. Let us all remember that the undocumented of Arizona are human beings caught in the political rhetoric of a divided nation and that no governor or politician in the nation has the right to rewrite history.

In times of need, the United States has consistently benefited from the cheap labor provided by Mexican immigrants and we continue to profit today as much as we did in the past. While many young Americans were fighting for freedom in World War II, far away from their homes, my grandfather was legally harvesting the fields of California putting fruits and vegetables on the tables of many American families. Today, I am a psychologist, speaking of my personal experiences, my road to American citizenship and my never-ending struggle to be free. I ask for your support, for your encouragement and for your commitment in declaring that we are all born to live free and to dream.

As a child, I was strongly influenced by the ancestral teachings taught to me by my grandmother. At their core, such teachings recognize all of humanity as being children of the ONE CREATOR. Across the span of history, this basic teaching has been distorted as we have enslaved the land and its people while hoarding the wealth and treasures that belong to all. Native peoples are still forced to wander foreign lands, expelled from their place of birth. No one should ever be considered illegal when they have been pushed out from their native lands. A thief becomes rich by what he steals. In time, he forgets that he was once a criminal and feels robust, righteous indignation defending what is hoarded.

As I consider the many challenges that I have faced in the past, I cannot recall experiencing a more blatantly hateful and intolerant sentiment towards immigrants than the reality we are living today. I am deeply troubled by the polarizing impact of our national political landscape and the increasingly blatant displays of hatred and intolerance throughout our nation.
I am pained by the effect of these laws, not just on the undocumented, but on all of our lives. I have witnessed how these inhumane laws are affecting the work of teachers, social and health workers, law enforcement, and others who must deal with the ramifications. As an example, I have worked in Washington State, North Carolina and other states, helping communities process the devastation experienced after the deportation of hundreds of parents. In the State of Washington, busloads of people were deported as they walked out of church. Children who were separated from their parents were placed in over crowed foster homes and detention centers, thus denying children a future and adding millions of dollars to our overcrowded jails and prisons.

Across our nation, educated professionals are breaking down under the pressures of increased racism and a faltering economy, fearing that the American dream is all but dead. But we cannot give up. We cannot allow the dream to end. The new cosmic vision of hope dictates that we must all come together as one nation, affirming and defending the ideals that make us human. Beyond the notion of oppression and lack, there is always the power of love. As human beings, we are a manifestation of love, embodied in order to heal the world and each other. Let us always remember that the force of creation is always above and beyond any false teaching of hate, fear, lack and limitation. We are citizens of the world, born to contribute and to improve life by using the lessons we’ve accumulated throughout history. While the impact of colonization and slavery on our collective consciousness cannot be denied, we must all strive as one family to reverse the impact that continues to manifest as legalized hatred.

The world is watching.

What legacy will your individual life declare once you are gone?

On what side of the divisive wall will you make a stand?

The story of human existence is really the story and evolution of human consciousness. As cultures evolve, so does their search for meaning and understanding. All of our ancestors, across time and distance, across every culture, have looked up to the heavens contemplating the nature and power of creation. What is this force behind creation? What is our relationship to the all powerful? What is the purpose and source of our existence? Because we, as humans, have self awareness, we can also contemplate the nature of our relationships to the Creator. We have been created out of the same substance and nature that has created the stars and planets. We are an integral part of the fabric of intelligence and self awareness. We are part of the collective and the unifying reality we call humanity, which in turn is a reflection of the Creator. In this experience of humanity, we are all related and connected by the same fabric.

In the case of our Toltec, Aztec and Mayan ancestors, we are able to trace history and human evolution some 25,000 years back. During this period of history, our ancestors told myths stating that that the world as we know it has been destroyed and recreated on four previous occasions. Let us call these separate worlds cycles of creation and leaps in evolution of awareness and consciousness. Each cycle of creation is governed by a given sun or light. We are currently living the fifth world, governed by the light of the fifth sun, or the fifth level of awareness. We are completing the next cycle of human evolution and are evolving to the next phase of evolution which is AWAKENING. The journey of AWAKENING is the greatest adventure humanity has ever contemplated because we are able to glance into the infinity and recognize that we are indivisible from the whole.

We awaken to the realization that there is no separation between ourselves and the force behind all creation. Time, space and distance are human made concepts created by our limited minds to organize our perceptions in some predictable fashion. The truth of our existence reaches beyond these constructs. We are all members of the same family and as individual human beings, we are here to be witnesses to the collective experience we call “life”. Hatred, fear, resentment, mistrust and suffering have a way to disconnect us from this realization of awakening. This is the only meaning of sin. In moments of darkness and doubt, we tend to forget who we are and where we come from. In moments of despair and suffering, we isolate and feel as though we are the only person that has ever experienced whatever pain we are experiencing. Separated from the source of power and creation we feel small, overwhelmed, ill, scared and depressed. Yet, when we stop to listen to the voice and power within; when we reach out and attempt to reconnect to the source of creation, divine intelligence rushes to greet us. Then and there we recognize that we could never be separate from our source, except when we choose to.

We possess self awareness and free choice and thus, we can choose to live our lives in accordance to our higher awareness or to see ourselves as separate and downtrodden. Our thoughts are powerful and we are co-creators of our reality. The experience of joy and power is equally valid to the experience of pain and failure. Once we surrender to this AWAKENING, the depth and breadth of our awareness deepens and we are able to perceive beyond what we thought was humanly possible. From this place of AWAKENING, greater joy is possible because we can see how everything is a part of the infinite whole. The awakened awareness within us is poised and ready to orchestrate and create according to our level of belief.

Let us resoundingly declare that there is nothing to fear. Let us welcome our joyful awakening.

Our Native Ancestors kept and maintained detailed records of time and the entire history of creation, recorded as far back as human awareness was able to be recorded. These Great Grandparents of ours carved twenty five thousand years of life and evolution on the face of the pyramids and stones.

By examining the patterns of time and the movement of the planets, our Great Grandparents were able recognize that life moves in beautiful and predictable patterns. These patterns can be measured and studied so that, we as humans, can move in sync with the dance of Creation. To move with the rhythm of life, requires a certain knowledge and respect for the universal laws. Yet, there is nothing that says that we HAVE to move with the rhythm of life.

The quality that most makes us human is our ability to exercise free will. We can choose to move with the flow of these observable rhythms or we can move in opposite direction. We can move in the direction of our happiness and bliss or we can move away, either consciously or subconsciously. In the end, there is no judgment of sin. No one gets expelled from paradise, much less burn in hell. The lover may falter and fall, but the Ultimate Lover forgives all and will always set a seat at the head of the table for the fallen loved. Do we receive our good? Can we receive? Are our arms and hearts open, or do we still find it difficult to leave the heart exposed, vulnerable for yet another fall.

In these cycles of life, the rhythm dictates the direction for creation and manifestation. You can either dance in step or choose not to. When you turn in the direction that is not of and for your good, you become separate and vulnerable. During your chosen absence, you can punish yourself, you can indulge yourself, you can hurt yourself, and ultimately, you can also forgive yourself. The digression away from your good can be long lived or it can last a mere second. In the mind of the Creator, time is irrelevant anyway and you will forever be welcomed back home.

We are all on a journey of self discovery. We are born in time and in flesh and are here to live and breathe the experience necessary to find the path back to the Lover. Finding our way back home, we recognize the source from where we came. As guides in our journey, we have the experiences and the heritage that have been left to us by all that came before us. The dreams and desires of our ancestors were guided by a profound love that revealed the very secrets of transcendence and the universal code of creation.

This infinite source of love guides every moment of our journey and watches over every step we take. The greatest discovery is the discovery of the self. By “self” I don’t mean the false self that we have created; with its infinite number of fears and insecurities, of lies and resentments. No, I am speaking of the higher self that tries to whisper its truth when we are quiet and capable of hearing without sound. In that quiet space, we come face to face with a spark of this divine source. This spark flickers and burns brighter than the sun and it burns within my soul.

I am the pair of eyes, sent to witness every possible expression of beauty and the heart created to hold the most tender of your creations. Gazing in your eyes, I recognize the same source of all love and now I feel the glance of God himself resting pleasingly upon me. The Lover is forever in your eye and the alchemical power of your touch transforms my soul. In an embrace, Lover and Beloved become one.

Now, when I am most abandoned to my prayer I sense you there. Alone, in the perfumed silence of my meditation I feel the warmth of your breath whispering in my ear and an ecstatic shiver makes my whole body quiver. I know no other safety but the assurance of your presence. I know no other home but the eternal warmth of your embrace.

¿A dónde vas?

-Dr. Jorge

What loving mind, what infinite wisdom, what creative force could account for every detail that I perceive? What loving heart could look back with warmth and say, “you are forever loved and forever forgiven”. There is a joy that beats in my heart and makes my soul sing a melody I never heard before.

The web of life weaves a complex net that brings into focus every person and situation I perceive. I must wonder then, what mind, what heart, what force could care so much for me, that it would lovingly and carefully craft every detail for the sole purpose of helping me heal my wounded past. Thank you Grand Father/Mother Creator for caring so deeply. You have deemed me worthy to receive and worthy to give. As your gentle presence flows through me, I manifest in my very hands the evidence of your existence. You are the fire in my breath and my last exhale after an exhausted night. You are my home.

I recognize you and I no longer fear you. I wonder why I ever did. Your warmth is my home. Your glow is my guiding light. You have given me an unimaginable wealth, a treasure of infinite price. You have taught me all I know as truth and you have gently held me ever moment of my life.

I am Home. I am complete.
