Haiti On My Mind

Last week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has had me glued to the internet.  The images have been haunting and I am struck by the magnitude of such an event…in such a poor country.  Current reports put the death toll at over 20,000 (sadly rising) with an estimated 300,000 people living on the street.  I have been incredibly impressed with the outpouring of support from around the world.  Millions of dollars have been raised through the simple act of sending a text message.  Indeed, today’s instant communication venues through email, text messages, tweets and blogs facilitate an unprecedented opportunity to come together to create a global community of care.

One powerful example of this is evident in the work of a my friend Paula who, six years ago, adopted two beautiful children from Haiti.  At the beginning of this year, she started a blog entitled, “Raising Little Spirits” to chronicle her family’s exploration in integrating Christianity, spirituality and the ancestral Vodou tradition of her children’s native land.

Naturally, the recent earthquake has created a greater intensity and relevance to their journey.  The children are confused, agitated and bewildered.  Paula and her husband struggle to find ways to help their children cope.

I invite you to subscribe and follow to her blog “Raising Little Spirits”.  I know that you will find it informative, enlightening and inspirational.  Paula is gifted writer with a profound sensitivity and understanding.  You will be moved!
